St. Francis champion discus thrower breaks her state record

• NORTH SUBURBAN CONFERENCE MEET: St. Francis junior Maggie Ewen reset her own state record Tuesday with a discus throw of 172 feet, 7 inches at the conference meet at Irondale High School. The toss broke the record she set last May with a throw of 166 feet, 8 inches. Ewen is Class 2A two-time defending state champion in the discus. She also took first place in the state in the shot put a year ago. "My goal is to do better than I've done in the past," Ewen said. "I hadn't really done that yet this year so finally achieving that goal was really nice."
