Wayzata junior Michael Smith made his mark in helping the Trojans to the Class 3A True Team state championship

The True Team track and field state meet is designed to lessen the importance of stars and reward team depth, and instead provide a place for the average athlete who has little chance to win an individual championship to contribute to a team title.

Yet someone still has to win the events. That’s where Wayzata junior Michael Smith made his mark in helping the Trojans to the Class 3A True Team state championship Friday at Stillwater High School.

Smith started off his meet by finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash. Then he won the 400 meters in a time of 48.43 seconds, the best in the state so far this spring, and the 200 meters in a time of 22.22. Smith accounted for 78 team points, nearly 10 percent of the team total of 830.

Barron withdraws from meet

The Minnetonka girls’ team took a hit when junior Mia Barron withdrew from the True Team Class 3A meet after feeling tightness in her hamstring after a few tries at the long jump.

Barron, who won the long jump, triple jump and 110-meter hurdles at the Hamline Elite Meet in April, still managed to finish fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 inches.

The Skippers finished fifth in the team standings with 695.5 points, thanks largely to the performance of junior Elizabeth Endy. She pulled of a difficult double-victory in the 400 and 800 meter runs and also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team.

Yalartai breaks school record

Bloomington Kennedy senior Patience Yalarti set a school record with a triple jump of 37 feet, breaking the previous record of 36 feet, 3¾ inches, set by Grace Udoh in 2007.

Bushman takes soccer job

Ben Bushman has been named boys’ soccer head coach at Holy Angels. Bushman has been an assistant coach with the team since 2007. Freshman coach Scott Daly, who is also the manager of the Holy Angels StarDome, will serve at Bushman’s assistant.

College commitments

Hannah Weidner, a junior right-side hitter for the Minnetonka volleyball team, has made a verbal commitment to Liberty University.

• DeLaSalle boys’ basketball guard Luke Scott has committed to the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. Scott started for the Islanders’ 2013 Class 3A state championship team and averaged 12.3 points and four rebounds per game in the tournament.
