Winning state championships can accomplish many things, like making an uncle and nephew get closer.

Pat McErlane never even competed in the discus when he was in high school, but he became a volunteer coach at Ada-Borup so he could work with his nephew Brian Blasey. Two years ago, it was an experiment in the making, yet on Saturday it was the perfect concoction with Blasey winning the discus at the Minnesota boys and girls state track championships at Hamline University.

He opened the meet on Friday by finishing third in the shot put.
