The Class 3A individual girls’ championship runs through the McCauley family.

Simley sophomore Reese McCauley is the defending state champion, after posting a 5-under-par 139 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids a year ago. She was ranked second in the state preseason ratings by the Minnesota Golf Association, behind her older sister, senior Isabella McCauley.

A Gophers recruit, Isabella didn’t play in the state tournament in 2021 after becoming the youngest Minnesotan to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open and creating a scheduling conflict. Isabella won the individual crown in 2019 at a record-tying 9 under par. The 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ready to repeat

Northfield senior Nate Stevens is the top-ranked boys’ player, and with good reason. The Class 3A individual defending state champion posted a 10-under-par 134 en route to the title a year ago. He accumulated 12 birdies and two bogeys during the two-day event. “That was about as well as I could have played,” Stevens said following the victory. He tied for ninth place in 2019.

Team sweeps possible

Two schools in Class 3A — Edina and Alexandria — have shots at sweeping the boys’ and girls’ team championships. The Edina boys’ squad is ranked No. 1, and the girls’ team holds down the second spot. It’s just the opposite for Alexandria’s teams. The girls’ team is the defending state champion.
