QUICK Q&A:  KEELON BROOKINS, TARTAN JUNIOR

Congratulations on winning the Class 2A 200-meter dash championship: Thank you. It was a great accomplishment. I feel really good about it.

How did you prepare for the race? I worked on getting my starts right. I made sure I was mentally ready.

Why do you like the 200 meters? It's my best race. It's a man's race. It's about who wants it more, about drive and passion.

When did you commit to Minnesota to play football? I went to junior day on Feb. 26. I talked to some of the coaches that day and they brought me into an office, told me they liked the way I played and offered me a full ride.

Were you shocked? Kind of, but I had a feeling in my gut it would happen.

What did the Gophers like about you? They liked my athleticism, my speed, my size, my character.

What is your size and speed? I'm 5-11 and weigh 190 pounds. I ran the 40 in 4.3.

It must be pretty nice to have recruiting out of the way early. It's reassuring, but it also makes me want to work harder and prove why they wanted me.
